Prophetic

BURN THE HORSE
In a conversation earlier this week, UALR Coach Steve Shields said this game against SMU reminded him of his first game with UALR as an assistant coach, which ended up being a victory at Northwestern.
He proved to be prophetic.
And that was before he had to suspend his starting center. Even without senior Derrick Bails, who is now suspended indefinitely, UALR rallied for a 57-47 victory at SMU on Friday.
After going 0-15 on the road last season, UALR starts this season 1-0.
UALR got zero combined points from seniors Alex Garcia-Mendoza, Montrell Thornton and Bails and still pulled out a victory. And the Trojans went in as a 10-point underdog in Las Vegas.
The difference came primarily on the defensive end on a night hen the offense wasn't as sharp as it could be. SMU was held without a field goal for about eight minutes in the second half as UALR rallied from 12 points down to seize control of the game.
UALR now has a tough road trip ahead. They'll fly out of DFW Saturday morning to Buffalo. Then they'll make the 45 minute or so drive South to Olean for Sunday afternoon's game against St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies lost their season opener 80-70 at Canisius on Friday night.
