BURN THE HORSE
Thankfully, nobody got hurt. That’s about all you can say
after UALR’s dominating 91-30 victory over St. Gregory’s Tuesday night at the
Jack Stephens Center.
BTH THE MORNING AFTER |
Actually, there were plenty of plusses for the Trojans in
the game. But most notably is the rest for some of the higher minutes players
and the experience for some of the lower minutes guys.
We’ve seen guys like freshmen Kemy Osse and Stetson Billings
get some serious game action in the past couple of games. And both have played
their best minutes of the season. On Tuesday, Osse finished with 16 points, 4
rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. Billings had 13 points, 3 rebounds, an assist
and a block. Those numbers surpassed what they’ve been able to do in the nine
previous games combined. The real question is: Can they do it against better
competition?
We’re about to find out in a big way as UALR travels to No.
11 Cincinnati on Thursday. But for a night, it was a nice confidence builder
against an obviously overmatched opponent.
BURN NOTICE
Consider the competition before reading this. But sophomore
Michael Javes had 11 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 blocks and a steal on
Tuesday. He made 5 of 7 field goal attempts. I’m not sure if that was progress.
But it was better minutes from him.
BURNING SENSATION
The defensive shutdown was remarkable no matter what
opponent was on the court. It started with UALR’s Leroy Isler and continued
with whoever UALR put in the game. But the Trojans held St. Gregory’s leading
scorer Fayzon Richey (24.3 ppg) to 2 points on 1 of 12 shooting.
STAT OF THE GAME
35-4: UALR held a 35-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
THE GOOD
Freshman John Gillon was 6 of 9 from the field, 3 of 6 from
three point range and 2 of 2 from the free throw line to finish with a
game-high 17 points.
THE BAD
St. Gregory’s had 11 offensive rebounds. Even though they
missed 39 shots, 11 offensive rebounds seems like too many.
THE UGLY
UALR’s biggest lead in the game was 64 points at 87-23 with
4:22 left.
VEGAS, BABY
No line was set.
PREDICTIONS
Nobody bothered to predict.
