UALR crushed by Ole Miss, falls to 1-2 on season

BURN THE HORSE
A surprising start led to a major thud on Friday.

52                   92

UALR couldn’t sustain an early seven-point lead and were blown out of Oxford, Miss., in a 92-52 loss to Ole Miss at Tad Smith Coliseum.
UALR falls to 1-2 on the season and next returns home to face a tough Wisconsin-Milwaukee team on Monday night. UALR Coach Steve Shields, who was issued a technical foul in the first half, did not speak on the postgame radio show, which abruptly ended before his appearance.
Freshman guard John Gillon made his first start of his career and scored 14 points to lead UALR. Freshman James White had 9 points and 7 rebounds while sophomore Michael Javes had 8 points.
UALR got almost nothing from its returning players. Junior Will Neighbour finished with 4 points while sophomores Taggart Lockhart and Ben Dillard were held scoreless.
Ole Miss, which shot 51.6 percent from the field and held a 47-34 rebounding advantage, was led by Derrick Millinghaus’ 19 points. Three-point bomber Marshall Henderson finished with 17 points, making 5 of 10 from beyond the arc.
UALR got off to a great start to the first half, taking a 10-3 lead after a jump shot by freshman Kemy Osse with 16:26 left. The Trojans hung around until the final seven minutes of the half, cutting the Ole Miss lead to 24-23 on a three-pointer by freshman Josh Hagins.
But Ole Miss went on a run to finish the half with a 47-33 lead.
Things went from bad to worse to awful early in the second half. Ole Miss scored 19 of the first 21 second-half points to take a 66-35 lead with 14:17 left. It only got worse from there.
The loss was reminiscent of a 75-35 loss to Texas A&M in 2007. That Trojan team never recovered from that game and finished 13-17 on the season.
