Home sweet home hasn't been the case early in the Sun Belt

BURN THE HORSE

How wacky has the Sun Belt Conference been this season?

Road teams have won almost 60 percent of conference games so far. UALR is at the top of that list with a 4-0 record on the road but the Trojans should take nothing for granted when they host Louisiana-Lafayette at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock.

In college basketball, the home team wins about 69 percent of the time. But home teams haven’t even been close so far this season in the Sun Belt.

Take last Saturday for instance. North Texas won at Louisiana-Monroe, Middle Tennessee won at Florida Atlantic, UALR won at Arkansas State and South Alabama won at Troy. The only home winner that night was Louisiana-Lafayette, which had to go to overtime to beat Florida International.

There’s a way of figuring out who’s in the best spot in conference play that many coaches use. They give a +1 for a road victory, a -1 for a home loss and nothing for home victories or road defeats.
It’s early but so far, UALR at +4 (4 road victories, 1 home victory) and Middle Tennessee at +3 (3 road victories, 3 home victories) are leading the way.

UALR has seven home and four road games remaining in Sun Belt play. The will Trojans hope to flip some of that home magic starting Thursday.
