UALR Coach Steve Shields was suspended for the game by the Sun Belt Conference, but he still moved into sole possession on the school’s all-time victories list. Shields now has 123 victories and is 10 behind Mike Newell.
Assistant Coach Joe Kleine served as interim coach and things seemed to operate much like they do when Shields is on the bench. Kleine stayed seated much of the time between assistant coaches Joe Golding and Charles Cunningham.
He really didn’t need to stand up and say much. Louisiana-Monroe started in a zone defense and Solomon Bozeman hit two three-pointers to get the scoring started. The Trojans never trailed.
Bozeman scored a career-high 26 points to lead UALR, which shot 65 percent from three-point range and broke the school record of 14. UALR’s three-pointers bettered Louisiana-Monroe’s game total 51-50.
Chuck guy finished with 15, Alex Garcia-Mendoza 10 and Matt Mouzy 9 for UALR.
Bozeman went 6 of 7 from three-point range, while Guy went 5 of 8, Mouzy 3 of 7 and Garcia-Mendoza 2 of 2.
In contrast, Louisiana-Monroe made only 1 of 18 three-point attempts. The Trojans had 19 assists to Louisiana-Monroe’s 7.
UALR is now 10-9 on the season and 2-2 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Trojans host Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday at the Stephens Center.
