SMU Scouting Report

BURN THE HORSE
So what should we expect to see from SMU on Friday?
First, they play a matchup zone defense (or at least they did last season when they had most of their success). Coach Matt Doherty has said already in the preseason that he plans to stick with it.
Second, they run a Princeton style offense. This is going to be a really big test defensively. One positive is that Coach Steve Shields' UALR teams have generally defended it pretty well (mostly vs. Denver). However, SMU has a much better big man on the inside than Denver does. And those Denver games took place in January and February. In November, it will be a real test.
“Yeah, we like it. As a matter of fact, we’re going to hopefully improve on it. That’s one of the reasons I hired Larry Mangino. Larry ran this offense when he was an assistant at Air Force. We like it. We’re committed to it. We think it’s really hard to guard and a fun way to play.”
