The Trojans will open Sun Belt Conference play on Jan. 2
with a road trip to face a couple of conference newcomers. UALR will begin the
18-game schedule with a trip to Texas State and Texas-Arlington.
But it’s the nonconference portion of the schedule that has
proven as difficult to put together as any in UALR Coach Steve Shields 11
seasons in Little Rock.
Burn The Horse has confirmed UALR will participate in a
neutral site event. The Trojans will be in a tournament in the U.S. Virgin
Islands right before Christmas. UALR will play Jacksonville State in its opener
and then the winner/loser of Southern Miss and Coppin State in its other game.
UALR went to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, last year.
In addition to the SEC’s Florida, UALR is in talks for road
games at a regional Big XII school and at a regional American Athletic
Conference school.
We reported previously that UALR would participate in an
exempt event in which the Trojans would get a home game with North Florida and
play road games against Florida, Middle Tennessee and Southern. UALR also has a
road game at Tulsa, which was part of a multi-year home-and-home series
previously signed.
If that sounds like a lot of games away from the Jack
Stephens Center, you’re correct. UALR currently has just one home game but
hopes to get at least five.
The entire 2013-2014 roster reported back to Little Rock this week and began
working with strength and conditioning coach John Barron. UALR will make a preseason
trip to Canada in August.
