UALR Rewind: Redshirt freshman James White shows off improvement

BURN THE HORSE
Redshirt freshman James White looked quite a bit different than freshman James White.

James White
White, who played only six minutes last season before an injury forced him to redshirt, made the most of that redshirt year. And he made the most of his restart to his freshman year last night. White finished with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block and 1 steal as UALR beat Tennessee-Martin 84-68 on Friday at the Jack Stephens Center.
White provided instant energy when he entered the game midway through the first half. And he continued that energy when he subbed in for foul-plagued Will Neighbour early in the second half.
His four offensive rebounds were huge.
Inside the three-point line, White was 8 of 9 from the field. He also hit both of his free throws, which was remarkable considering the flagrant foul leveled on him seconds earlier.

THE GOOD

Freshman John Gillon had 22 points and 3 assists without a turnover.

THE BAD

UALR’s post tandem of Michael Javes and Gus Leeper combined for 3 points and 4 rebounds in 23 minutes.

THE UGLY

UALR made only 10 of 17 first-half free throws for 59 percent. The Trojans did rally to make 12 of 13 in the second half though.

TROJAN MAN

Will Neighbour, playing with concussion symptoms, had 13 points and 13 rebounds.

STAT OF THE GAME

UALR outrebounded Tennessee-Martin 39-32, including 11-4 in offensive rebounds. Martin had 22 offensive rebounds in its exhibition victory.

VEGAS, BABY

Vegas was convinced. The line started at 10.5 points and shrunk to 7 by gametime to try and entice folks to go with Tennessee-Martin. As it turned out, UALR easily covered.
