BURN THE HORSE
It’s a bittersweet day at Burn The Horse.
Today is the last day at UALR for Sports Information
Director Joe Angolia, who has been with the Athletics Department since the
first year the Jack Stephens Center was opened. He’s leaving to be closer to
his home in Kentucky.
It’s bittersweet because I’m extremely happy for him. He has
a great opportunity and will continue to do great work. But he’s going to be
missed.
Much of what comes out of the Sports Information office
today does so because of him. That means the standard stuff like press releases
and game notes. But it also means the live video, the UALR Athletics mobile
phone app, the virtual media guides. These are all technological advances that
Angolia helped bring to UALR.
He also spent an immense amount of time cleaning up the UALR
record books. For those who work in the media, getting accurate historical data
is a must.
Check out one of his final contributions to UALR: The 2012-2013 UALR men's basketball record book.
More importantly, I consider him a friend and someone who
was great to work with – both while at the statewide daily and at Burn The
Horse. He has always attempted to accommodate my requests. And some of them
haven’t always been easy.
Men’s basketball now rests with Interim Sports Information
Director Patrick Newton, who I believe will continue to do a great job. Newton
spent last year as the intern in the Sports Information office. He did a little
bit of everything, including a lot of work with the NCAA Women’s Tournament at
the Stephens Center.
Best of luck to Joe. And welcome aboard to Patrick.
