UALR hosts Denver in biggest game at Stephens Center since 2009

When UALR hosts Denver on Saturday at the Jack Stephens Center, it will be the biggest game that facility has hosted since Feb. 19, 2009.

UALR (9-13) and Denver (16-5) are tied atop the Sun Belt Conference's West Division with identical 6-2 records. The winner of tonight's game will hold sole possession of first place with seven conference games remaining.

That 2009 game didn't work out so well for UALR. The Trojans entered the game at 19-6 and 12-2 in Sun Belt play while Western Kentucky was 17-8 and 11-3. UALR got off to a great start that night before Stevie Moore walked off the bench and went to the locker room at one point during the first half and ended up sitting in the student section for a while. He was allowed to return to the bench in the second half and even re-entered the game late after foul trouble plagued the Trojans. UALR eventually lost 78-69.

That loss was costly because UALR and Western Kentucky finished with identical 15-3 conference records. WKU was the designated NIT team because it swept the season series with the Trojans. And when UALR was ousted in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Tournament, the Trojans missed the postseason.

UALR beat Denver earlier this season. That means the Trojans would hold a tiebreaker over the Pioneers with a victory tonight.
