Big start, lack of turnovers helps UALR overcome rebounding, free throws

Pondering when the last time we got stuck in a Stephens Center parking lot traffic jam while compiling tonight’s Burn The Horse UALR Rewind.

Keys to victory
BIG START Nice first-half effort for UALR and it would have looked even better if Denver’s Brian Stafford didn’t hit a tough three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the UALR halftime lead to 29-24. Grade: A

BOARD IT: UALR and Denver each had 28 rebounds on Saturday. Grade: D

TAKE CARE UALR had 11 assists with only 8 turnovers while Denver had 9 assists and 17 turnovers. Grade: A.

FREE TIME The good news was that UALR went to the free throw line 35 times to Denver’s 15. The bad news is that UALR made only 22 of those 35. Had UALR made free throws, the second half wouldn’t have even been close. Grade: B

Vegas, baby
Denver was a four-point favorite, making UALR a spread beater in nine of their past 10 outings as an underdog.

Predictions
Everyone’s a loser today. Omni Rankings (11-6) continues to hold a slight edge over Jeff Sagarin (14-8) and CBS Sports line (14-8).

Courtney Jackson
Stat of the game
10 of 21: UALR’s free throw shooting in the second half, the only reason that game was close. Even good free throw shooters were missing. Chuck Guy missed four, D’Andre Williams missed three and Ben Dillard and Taggart Lockhart each missed two.

Always negative
28-28: UALR and Denver each had 28 rebounds. That’s not nearly a good enough effort on the boards for the Trojans.

Keep it positive
28-5: That’s the margin UALR outscored Denver in bench points.

Player of the game
Courtney Jackson. Denver couldn’t guard him. Jackson finished with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. He made 4 of 5 field-goal attempts and 5 of 6 free throw attempts while playing 35 minutes.
