The game ended with no foul called on a final shot attempt by UALR guard Solomon Bozeman just before the buzzer.
The Sun Belt Conference is apparently cracking down on these types of postgame incidents. They suspended North Texas women's coach Shanice Stephens for the same thing after a postgame incident at Middle Tennessee.
This was the statement issued by UALR Athletic Director Chris Peterson:
“It was the decision of the Sun Belt Conference office that coach Shields’ actions following the Denver game violated the league’s sporting behavior policy. We hold very high standards for our coaches and student-athletes, and unfortunately coach Shields’ actions did not meet those standards. I have met with Steve regarding the league’s decision and he fully understands the consequences of his actions. Athletic contests are very passionate and emotional for those involved, and unfortunately sometimes things are said and done in the heat of battle that we wish could be retracted. Steve has a history of being a positive role model for his student-athletes, and I am confident that will continue as we move forward.”Assistant Coach Joe Kleine is expected to take over the coaching duties for Thursday's game. Shields is not permitted any contact with the team or coaches after 6 p.m. on Thursday.
One thing that isn't clear is whose record the game will go on.
Shields has 122 victories at UALR and needs one victory to move into second place on UALR's all-time list.
Shields will return for Saturday's home game against Louisiana-Lafayette.
