First two on the road

BURN THE HORSE
UALR opens with consecutive road games this season. The Trojans play Friday at SMU and Sunday at St. Bonaventure. UALR has gone 2-0 on the road to start the season only twice under Coach Steve Shields. Both ended up being division championship teams. UALR also went 0-2 two different times and went on to win division championships.
What does it mean? If UALR loses both and plays poorly, it may mean a lot. If UALR loses both and plays well, it could be encouraging. If UALR splits and plays well, it's even better. And if UALR wins both it's buckle your seatbelt time.
2003-2004
L 89-72 at Arizona State
L 89-75 at St. Bonaventure
Went on to win the Sun Belt Conference's East Division
2004-2005
L 90-65 at Oklahoma State
L 79-54 at Georgia Tech
The Oklahoma State game was close until the final eight minutes. The Georgia Tech game was never close. Still, UALR went on to win a second-consecutive East Division title.
2005-2006
L 75-65 at Appalachian State
L 72-67 at Michigan State (in Grand Rapids)
App State game was very disappointing but the Trojans nearly knocked off Michigan State that day. Season never really game together.
2006-2007
L 93-59 at Texas Tech
L 66-60 at Tulsa
Opened with an upset against Akron and played decently for a half against Texas Tech. But the loss to Tulsa, a game UALR very easily could have won, exposed problems that would plague this team all year.
2007-2008
W 71-40 at Loyola Marymount
W 59-52 at Rice
The Loyola Marymount victory was flawless and helped get this team off to a good start. After a mid-season swoon, a late run propelled the Trojans to the Sun Belt's West Division Championship.
2008-2009
W 67-40 at Cal Poly
W 66-65 at Pepperdine
The best team Coach Steve Shields has had to date at UALR got off to a great start to the season. That team proved to be road warriors on the way to a West Division Championship.
2009-2010
L 92-64 at Ole Miss
L 59-45 at Tulsa
UALR was in both of these games for quite a while. Both were different and both exposed flaws. Still, this team was improving before an injury imploded the season.
